Beth Luey is Senior Lecturer and founding director of the Historical Editing and Publishing Program at Arizona State University. She is author of Handbook for Academic Authors and of numerous articles on the history and practice of publishing, which are drawn on her years of experience as an editor.

This guide has four virtues: the annotated bibliography itself, 900 English-language books and articles (the latest published in 1988); an excellent index; linkage of the editing of historical documents and literary texts; and ``Suggestions for Teaching'' at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The book would have been improved by a more extensive introductory discussion, including a distinction made between textual scholarship and the production of editions, and there are two serious omissions: William P. Williams and Craig Abbott's Introduction to Bibliographical and Textual Studies (Modern Language Assn., 1989. 2d ed.) and D.F.
