Más que centrarse exhaustivamente en el desarrollo militar de la época, el autor conduce su cámara hacia dos jóvenes oficiales del 4º y 7º de Húsares: el ayudante de campo D´Hubert y el oficial del 7º, Feraud. Conrad nos señala los dos polos antagónicos, Caín con su Abel, para centrarse en la historia: por una simple confusión al llevar órdenes de arresto contra Feraud, este, aludiendo a una falta a honor decide enfrentarse en singular duelo con el edecán D´Hubert.

Best known for his novella Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad (1857–1924) was a Polish–British author. Although not a native English speaker, Conrad came to be regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. He revolutionized the English novel with books such as The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Before publishing his first novel, Almayer's Folly, in 1895, Joseph Conrad spent almost 20 years working mostly at sea as a merchant sailor.
