About the Author

I grew up on Chicago's South Side, the oldest boy in a large, working-class family. We moved to Los Angeles when I was 16 and my father struggled to support the family. To help out I worked as a dishwasher to get through high school, then joined the Army at age 17. I served as an infantryman, a Ranger School instructor, a Drill Instructor, and left with an honorable discharge at age 20. I sold encyclopedias door-to-door, then sold cameras, then re-upped and went to Vietnam as a combat photographer. I was one of sixty enlisted men serving in Vietnam to receive a direct appointment to second lieutenant of infantry. I served eight more years on active duty in a variety of positions, including company commander. I left active duty in 1974. I worked in corporate communications for a few years, then went out on my own as a freelance photographer and writer. I've been very lucky to do well enough at this to support myself and my family. I now have published thirteen nonfiction books, had a couple of screenplays produced, and penned more magazine pieces than I can count. I turned to fiction in 2010. I'm divorced and live with my adult daughter and our two spoiled Chihuahuas in an urban forest in Asheville, NC.
