After her good friend Godwin has a nasty quarrel with John, his significant other, full-time needlework shop owner and part-time sleuth Betsy Devonshire finds herself with a roommate. Betsy doesn't mind having company, though Godwin is restless and unhappy over the sudden break-up.

But sadness turns to grief when Betsy and Godwin discover John dead in his home, and Godwin is arrested for the murder. Betsy knows her friend couldn't be the killer, and sets out to prove it. What she learns is that John had a cat's cradle of secret dealings that had made him a bundle of money, and a lot of enemies. Now, Betsy has to untangle a web of lies if she's going to save Godwin-and find the murderer.

The Barnes & Noble Review
Monica Ferris's popular Needlecraft mystery series has established a delightful pattern of crafty mysteries that satisfy both stitchery fans and mystery readers. In Embroidered Truths, Betsy Devonshire, amateur sleuth and owner of Crewel World needlework shop in Minnesota, starts out trying to untangle her gay friend and employee Godwin's failing relationship. Godwin's overly controlling significant other, John, has tossed Godwin out after yet another a bitter quarrel. This time, however, there's no chance the mismatched pair will kiss and make up, for someone has changed the pattern of John's life permanently. When gentle, hardworking, reliable, fun-loving Godwin is arrested for John's murder, Betsy will stop at nothing to set him free, following the elusive threads of the evidence and picking her way through a tangle of truths, half truths, and outright lies until she reveals the real murderer's deadly design. (Needlecrafters will also enjoy the free counted cross-stitch pattern included in Embroidered Truths.) Sue Stone

In Monica Ferris's Embroidered Truths: A Needlecraft Mystery, the ninth entry in this winning cozy series (after 2004's Crewel Yule), needlework shop owner Betsy Devonshire comes to the rescue of her friend and employee, Godwin, when Godwin is accused of killing his obnoxious and controlling lover, John. As always, Ferris sprinkles a generous helping of knitting and cross-stitch tips throughout. Agent, Nancy Yost. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Spring in Minnesota is good for Betsy Devonshire, owner of needlecraft shop Crewel World (Crewel Yule, 2004, etc.), until her manager and friend is accused of murder. Godwin Du Lac's been staying with Betsy since his lover, attorney John Nye, unexpectedly threw him out upon their return from a Mexico City vacation. When Goddy and Betsy find Nye's body, some valuables are missing. But the police arrest Goddy when they discover two wills. The unsigned second will cuts Goddy out of a substantial sum. Yes, Goddy was out of the house that night, but Betsy, who has a knack for sleuthing, knows he's incapable of murder, and she's happy when many of their customers pitch in to keep things going so that she can help prove his innocence. Betsy hires a topnotch lawyer and gets unexpected help when Susan Lavery, a customer who works for John's firm, offers to root around for possible lawyerly suspects. Meanwhile, John's brother has found that John had a false identity set up and an awful lot of money that couldn't have come from his day job. Susan narrowly escapes with her life when she's attacked and dumped in a car trunk. But it's Betsy who puts together the clues to the killer's identity. A lighthearted tale with no real sense of danger, unless you prick yourself working the included needlework pattern.
