Piers Page is currently a Specialty Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Worthing General Hospital. After undergoing officer training, he spent time researching the outcome of mild traumatic brain injury and has subsequently authored and co-authored papers and book chapters in the fields of trauma and orthopaedics and military surgery.


Dr Asif Shah qualified from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and is a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine currently based at South Tyneside District Hospital in the North East of England. Dr Shah is dual accredited in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine, and continues to provide inpatient care to respiratory and general medical patients, including working on the acute medical take.


Greg Skinner is currently a consultant paediatric cardiologist at East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre.

Major Alan Weir is a Military Emergency Medicine Trainee currently training in the Wessex Region. He graduated from the Medical Schools of St Andrews and Manchester Universities. He initially undertook Surgical training prior to commencing training in Emergency Medicine. As a Military Doctor he has seen Service in a variety of locations, including Afghanistan.
He holds an interest in Military Emergency Medicine and trauma management; Medical Education; and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Medicine. He has completed the postgraduate Diploma in Medical Toxicology from Cardiff University and plans to undertake a higher research degree in this field of study in the future.

Miss Natasha Eagles is an Obstetrics & Gynaecology Registrar at University College London Hospital.

Description: This is a quick reference book with 12 chapters covering a basic approach to the management of common emergencies at the patient bedside. The chapters include basic principles, patient presentations, and a more in-depth dive into specific diseases that are organized by body system. This is the second edition of the book, which was first published in 2007.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to outline a simple approach to the early management of certain clinical emergencies. The authors first outline steps focused on immediate management and early diagnostic testing for common presentations, then discuss evidence-based guidelines in the disease-based chapters. This is a worthy objective given that any provider, regardless of their specialty, is likely to encounter patient emergencies during their career.
Audience: The authors are from various medical specialties. They present a simplified outline that is understandable for providers from a wide variety of training and backgrounds. Their intended audience is both clinicians who are called to the bedside to start treatment as more experienced providers are consulted, and those more senior who appreciate a checklist-based approach to care. This would be a good reference for those who do not have extensive experience in emergency medicine, or for medical students and residents early on in their emergency medicine careers.
Features: This book covers the need-to-know emergencies and crucial first steps that need to be taken when time is of the essence. For each patient presentation (i.e., back pain, chest pain, the ill pregnant patient), the book outlines immediate management steps in a red box, then goes into history, exam findings, testing, and common causes. The authors then dive into chapters divided by body system, with several need-to-know emergent conditions listed for each one. Each emergent condition has a definition, clinical presentation, and immediate and further management steps listed. Every topic also has further readings listed, making it easy to find additional information. Some topics have additional graphics such as EKG tracings, graphs, or tables. A unique part of the book is that each patient presentation and disease state has one of four graphics next to them indicating if it is a life-threatening emergency, condition with potential for rapid deterioration, condition that needs more careful assessment, or a less-emergent condition that allows the team to control timing of interventions.
Assessment: This is a great quick and basic reference book for anyone who feels uncomfortable when faced with patient emergencies. I find the updated organization with problem-based and disease-based approaches to be very thoughtful, and the steps are easy to follow.
