The book of Emily was a submarine that would not be sunk. Every time I tried to sink this book it kept coming to the surface, demanding to be written, demanding to be published. I didn't want to write about the deep sadness of my adolescent years. I didn't want to look at it, or relive the pain. And I didn't want to tell on my mom or face the anger of some of my relatives who didn't want me to publish this book.

During the writing of this book I wanted to rescue Emily. But the story was character driven and she would only let me go so far. The character had a story to tell and she didn't want me to interfere.

It wasn't until I published Emily that I realized how healing it was to my inner child and that the story was written by a child who was rendered silent at an early age. I was that Silenced Child. The fictional character of Emily was the cloth and my life story was the thread that wove the tiny stitches of Emily's story.
