Description: This book efficiently covers the broad and ever-changing area of EMS medicine.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the author, is to provide a current book on EMS medicine, which is of increasing importance now that the field has become a board-certified emergency medicine subspecialty. This objective is a worthy one, and this book adds to the few thorough publications with educational material that are currently available.
Audience: The intended audience is current EMS physicians, and it is most clearly aimed at young or new EMS physicians. However, anyone, from medical students with an interest in the field to rotating residents on their EMS elective, EMS fellows currently in training, EMS physicians studying for their board exams, and community EMS physicians seeking to better hone their knowledge and skills, would find this book helpful. The author is an emergency medicine physician who was fellowship training in EMS and is certified as a firefighter and paramedic. He has been a practicing physician for a little over 10 years, and appears to be a well-published and credible authority in EMS medicine.
Features: The book covers a wide array of topics, from the legal aspects of prehospital care to disaster medicine and mass-casualty response. The book does a good job of covering a broad area of knowledge in a succinct way. In particular, the organization of the chapters lends itself to easy review and study. The "Key Points" section at the end of each chapter is a positive attribute. The pictures are a great way to help readers visualize what the chapters discuss. However, many of the chapters, especially in the first section, lack diagrams and photographs, which would have been helpful. The entire book is available online, for a subscription fee, which makes the information more mobile and possibly more likely to reach a wider audience.
Assessment: Overall, this book does a good job of covering the rather broad subject of EMS medicine. Every EMS agency is different, which makes this task that much more difficult. There are not many books published in this field that cover this specialty as efficiently. This is certainly one of the more current books available. It lends itself to being an additional study aid for the American Board of Emergency Medicine certification examination in EMS, alongside the official textbook of the National Association of EMS Physicians, Emergency Medical Services: Clinical Practice and Systems Oversight, 2nd edition, Cone et al. (Wiley-Blackwell, 2015).
