Specialists review the current understanding of the key mechanisms associated with the establishment, maintenance, and termination of a successful pregnancy in human, primates, and sub-primate animals. They consider such aspects as the production of growth factors that enhance fetal-placental growth; the cross talk between the maternal and fetal-placental systems; and the signals that lead to parturition, the final maturation of the fetus/neonate, and the bonding between offspring and mother. The treatments are informed by the recognition over the past two decades that signals from the conceptus play an important role in a successful pregnancy, and that cytokines and lymphokines, previously thought to be unique to immune cells, are expressed by the fetal and/or uterine tissue and must be counted among the growth factors.
