About the Author

Pat Deluhery worked on Gov. Harold Hughes' successful campaign for the U.S. Senate before moving to Washington, D.C. to work in Hughes' office from 1969 to 1975. He then worked eight months in Sen. John Culver's office and returned to St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, as an assistant professor. He was elected to the Iowa Senate in November 1978 and served until December 2002. He graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, and the London School of Economics in London, England. He and his wife, Mardi, have three daughters and three grandchildren.
Steve Dunn has written four player biographies and two game stories for the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). He retired and moved to Des Moines in 2014 after four decades as a sports writer, reporter and managing editor for daily and weekly newspapers. He received several awards in state and company-sponsored contests for his newswriting and editorial writing. A graduate of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, he and his wife, Cindy, have two daughters and three grandchildren. In addition to baseball research, he ushers for the Iowa Cubs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs; serves as president of the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Des Moines, Iowa, and on the board of the Senior College of Greater Des Moines; plays in the Greater Des Moines Community Band; and volunteers with Hope Ministries and the Food Bank of Iowa. He also rides about 800 miles a year on his bike over Central Iowa's bike trails.
