C. Wayne McIlwraith is University Distinguished Professor, Barbara Cox Anthony University Endowed Chair in Orthopedics and Director of Orthopaedic Research at the Orthopaedic Research Center, Colorado State University, USA.

Description: With its eye-catching title, this book provides a concise review of the major issues in equine welfare. All chapters are united by this common theme, but tackle specific topics.
Purpose: The main purpose is to make readers aware of welfare issues in the equine industry, both in general and in specific industries. Many of these issues are hot topics and a reference is needed to highlight the facts.
Audience: Those involved in the equine industry, including veterinary students and seasoned clinicians, are the intended audience. The 25 contributors (veterinarians and nonveterinarians) are from private practice, academia, and the federal government.
Features: Among the issues of equine welfare this book discusses are nutritional management, pain management, and euthanasia, as well as more specific issues such as PMU ranching and rodeo horse welfare. The chapter on euthanasia has a section of case examples based on clinical situations, which discuss the outcomes of the cases and reasons that led to the decision for euthanasia. Missing from this book is a chapter on pathology in some of these horses (i.e. neglected horses, starved horses) that discusses what clinicians need to look for to support or refute the cause of the condition of the horse(s). The fact that the horse is starving will not be disputed (in cases of suspected neglect), but the cause of the starvation will be. Unfortunately, the photographs are in black and white and are occasionally poorly reproduced.
Assessment: The book is written in an easy to comprehend style and the chapters are concise. It does a good job of capturing readers' attention and provides pertinent information. Few books are specific to equine welfare; I would recommend this one for the library of anyone involved in the field of equine medicine or equine/animal welfare.
