About the Author

Tyrone C. Howard is the Pritzker Family Endowed Chair in the School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. Howard is the co-director of the UCLA Pritzker Center for Strengthening Families and Children. He also is the co-director of the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools. Dr. Howard has published over 100 scholarly journal articles, book chapters, policy briefs, and technical reports. He is the author of six books. Dr. Howard is the president of the American Educational Research Association, which is the world’s largest educational research organization. He is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association. In 2021 Dr. Howard was elected as a member of the National Academy of Education. His work has been highlighted by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post. He is regularly featured on National Public Radio and many other media outlets. Dr. Howard is considered one of the nation’s foremost thinkers on issues tied to racial inequality in education.

Revising educational frameworks to give equity and ensure accessibility for all students is a difficult task, but Howard addresses educators' and leaders' roles in not only understanding what equity is as a concept, but how to implement it in their daily routines and lessons. He urges educators to turn their "safe spaces" into "brave spaces" and be willing to tackle hard questions and come out the other side with respect and honesty. This text aims to look at education from every angle: district-wide, from the lens of school leaders, within the school itself, and in the classroom. Howard reminds readers that this work is not easy, but it is important for every student. He thinks these goals can be attained by looking at each situation through three theoretical anchors: justice, recognizing and repairing harm, and belonging. Turning equity into a core value of everyday teaching is necessary and benefits all in the classroom.
