Interviews

An Interview with Ernie Anastos

Q: Why did you write a children's book?

A: I wrote this book for every kid that has a dream. When I was a child my dream was to be a TV reporter. I set up my own radio station in the basement of my home and pretended to be a reporter. Through this book I want to help other kids realize their dreams. In addition, this book benefits a charity that is dear to my heart, The Make A Wish Foundation, and I am thrilled that we can help make a contribution to this worthy organization through Ernie & The Big Newz.

Q: Where do you see young Ernie going in his Newz career?

A: In this book Ernie starts out as a young reporter. It is his first day on he job. By the end, he has his first big scoop and has learned some valuable lessons in reporting. Through subsequent books, I hope to see this character grow up in the news business learning more with each story and enjoying it all every step of the way.

Q. How long have you been a journalist?

A. I have worked for several television stations in New York City over my twenty-five-year career.

Q. Where have you worked?

A. I have had the pleasure of being an anchor at WABC-TV from 1978 to 1989, then I joined WCBS-TV as the 5:00 and 11:00 p.m. anchor. I worked at WCBS-TV for the first time from 1989-94. Then I joined WWOR-TV in 1997, and served as an anchor at that station until 2000, when I rejoined WCBS in January 2001. I left WCBS for the second time in 2005. My first day at WNYW was July 5, 2005. At Fox 5 I am partnered with Rosanna Scotto on the 5:00 and 10:00 p.m. newscasts.

Q. What are some major stories that you have covered for television?

A. There have been many I have covered in the New York area comprised of live coverage of breaking news, political conventions and special events. On September 11th, I anchored award-winning news coverage of the World Trade Center attacks. I have traveled inside Cuba and to meet with Fidel Castro as part of a series of special reports on the 45th anniversary of the revolution. Other assignments have taken me to the Vatican in Rome and the White House in Washington, D.C. I covered John Cardinal O'Connor's official trip to El Salvador and Nicaragua, and reported on the tragic death and funeral of Princess Diana live from London.

Q: What future do you have in mind for Ernie & The Big Newz? An animated series?

A: Absolutely. I am planning a series of Ernie books and we have been in talks to have this turned into an animated series so kids across the world can experience the adventures of Ernie & the Big Newz.
