Tracie Fuqua is the program director and instructor in Medical Assisting at Wallace State Community College in Alabama. She has been in education for more than two decades and is passionate about teaching students to provide quality patient care. Tracie is active in local, state, and national organizations, including the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). She serves as lead item writer for Elsevier's HESI practice and exit exams for Medical Assisting in addition to taking over as lead author of Essentials of Human Diseases and Conditions.

This encyclopedic textbook is a source of comprehensive information about diseases and conditions for paraprofessional students and instructors. The purpose is to provide basic, comprehensive information about common diseases and conditions for better understanding. The authors also provide information for instructors to supplement teaching. The intended audience is paraprofessionals such as medical assistants, medical transcriptionists, insurance coders, or other allied health professionals who havethe need for basic human anatomy and physiology and medical terminology knowledge. This book contains an encyclopedic review of common diseases. The diseases are categorized by systems. The chapters are organized with a content outline, learning objectives, and key terms at the beginning. Each disease listed in the chapter has clear headings dividing out signs and symptoms, etiology, diagnoses, and treatment. The book has excellent color illustrations, diagrams, and photographs. At the end of the book there is a glossary of terms and an appendix describing common laboratory and diagnostic tests divided by systems. I would recommend this book for teaching and reviewing basic disease information. It is an excellent textbook for paraprofessional students. It would also be useful as a handy reference for medical office personnel and for those in patient teaching. The book is well organized with beautiful color illustrations, clear color photographs, and easy to read content with clear headings to help when looking information up quickly.

The book intends to simplify current medical information about the more common clinical disorders encountered in the healthcare field. The purpose is to allow students to have a better understanding of clinical disorders. The advantage of this leads to (1) better understanding of the effects of disease on the body, (2) increased communication skills within the healthcare team, and (3) personal and professional education. According to the authors, medical assisting, medical transcription, insurance coding, and other allied health students who have had an introduction to anatomy and physiology and medical terminology will find this study of disease interesting and informative. The authors are registered nurses and instructors in allied health programs within a technical college. Each disease entity is presented in a format that discusses the nature of the disease according to symptoms and signs experienced by the patient, etiological factors, diagnosis, and treatment options. Each of the 15 chapters begins with a brief review of the normal functions of the appropriate body systems and is reinforced by numerous illustrations. This easy-to-read text describes the diagnosis and treatment of several hundred commonly occurring medical conditions. The many illustrations help the reader better understand the disease or trauma. The book would be a good text for allied health students and an excellent reference for medical assistants, coders, billers, medical transcriptionists, secretaries, and court reporters.

Purpose: This encyclopedic, but simplified handbook includes comprehensive information about hundreds of diseases in an orderly and easy to comprehend manner.
Audience: This revised edition is a stimulating and practical textbook for students, as well as a valued reference for healthcare providers in any type of medical setting.
Features: Each chapter starts with a brief overview of a specific body system that is reinforced with clear illustrations. Important pathologic mechanisms are also explained and illustrated, followed by a presentation of a disease entity with discussion of signs and symptoms, patient screening, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, prevention, and patient teaching.
Assessment: This fourth edition is excellent. The authors go to great lengths to present this traditionally difficult material in easy to understand concepts. I highly recommend this book. It would be a valued resource in any medical or college/university library.
