Description: With an explicit focus on maternity and newborn care, this textbook, in eight units and 24 chapters, explores the essential nursing knowledge base needed to render safe and satisfying nursing care to women and their families throughout the childbearing years and beyond. Separating physiology from pathophysiology, two units are devoted to addressing special nursing considerations for at-risk pregnancies and at-risk neonates.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide student nurses with the essential clinical knowledge base to render competent maternity, newborn, and women's health nursing care within the context of 21st century knowledge and clinical realities.
Audience: Student nurses are the intended audience.
Features: Chapters start with a key sentence, Words of Wisdom (WOW), providing a pertinent clinical concept that readily adapts to class discussions or discussion posts. Learning objectives are succinctly itemized, and the listed key terms include both acronyms and pronunciation features. The therapeutic assessment, nursing assessment, and nursing management of every disorder is delivered in sections that are clearly labeled and detailed. The layout of the textbook facilitates its reading and ties the content to nursing practice. Easy-to-read tables and boxes are used to illustrate comparison and contrasts. Evidence-based practice considerations are included in clearly defined boxes that may include case studies. There are teaching guidelines for patient prevention and self-care in bulleted boxes. Illustrations demonstrate clinical concepts. The key learning points are succinctly summarized at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: Although not as comprehensive in the maternal and pediatric content as Maternity and Pediatric Nursing, 4th edition, Ricci et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2021), this textbook has some comparable features that are often not found in other textbooks. Those elements include the inclusion of sections on barriers to health care; healthcare cost containment; use of complementary and alternative medicine; and legal and ethical issues in maternal, newborn, and women's health care. Ricci, by framing nursing care within a social and individual-specific context, continues the pattern delineated in Maternity and Pediatric Nursing. The student nurse is again provided with tools to advance patient education and offer counseling that is supportive of patient rights and autonomy. This textbook provides a relevant and clinically-sound framework to educate student nurses on women's health, maternity, and neonatal care.
