“Etan Frost” is a modern-day retelling of “Ethan Frome,” the classic New England novel of love and loss written by Edith Wharton and first published in 1911. Etan Frost now is a dairy goat farmer in Monroe, a small town near the midcoast Maine town of Belfast.
Etan comes from a family with a tragic history. His depressed and poverty-stricken father, who originally owned the farm, committed suicide after killing his wife. Now, seeking someone to help him take care of his invalid wife Anna, Etan hires a young woman from Norway, Kristin, who formerly worked as an au pair in nearby Camden.
Despite trying to resist desire, Etan and Kristin fall hopelessly in love, and thus begin a journey that while intoxicating at first ultimately leads to death and destruction.
In her forward to the original novel, Ms. Wharton indicated that this was a tale which could be told by many different people—and each time, the tale would be different. Thus, this tale is the same—and yet it is different. Set against the long, cold and bleak New England winter, the tale is as alive and compelling as it was back then.
