About the Author

Leah Grebner, PhD, RHIA, CCS, FAHIMA has more than 25 years of experience in Health Information Management. Her background includes inpatient and outpatient acute care, home health, skilled nursing, and medical office work, in addition to professional consulting. She shares her passion for educating the public on personal health records and health literacy in the classroom and with professional organizations at the regional, state, and national levels. A member of the AHIMA Consumer Engagement Task Force and the Council on Excellence in Education PPE Workgroup, Dr. Grebner received the Literary Legacy Triumph Award by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in 2012. In addition to MANAGEMENT OF HEALTH INFORMATION: FUNCTIONS AND APPLICATIONS, 2E, she published Ethics Case Studies for Health Information Management (Cengage Learning) in 2008.

Description: Intended for classroom use with health information management students, this book analyzes ethical problems in the everyday management of personal health information and the practice of health information management.
Purpose: The purpose is to present real-life scenarios to explore ethical dilemmas that a health information manager could encounter in practice. The author, an educator at a community college in Illinois, taught an ethics course but could not find a suitable text for the class, so she wrote her own. The author's objectives are met using the case study methodology to provide students a cross-section of ethical dilemmas.
Audience: The primary audience is health information management students in a two-year or four-year degree program in a college or university. The book could also be used by practicing health information managers to provide continuing education and discussion of ethical situations in healthcare settings. The author is an experienced health information manager and educator.
Features: The introductory chapter explains the case study methodology that teaches readers to outline ethical problems along with potential solutions with the goal of choosing the best possible solution. The 30 cases begin with a brief scenario and end with a series of questions that guide readers through a critical thinking process to arrive at a decision. The book contains a correlation grid that maps the case topics to the American Health Information Management Association credential use and scope of practice. An instructor's manual is available with suggested solutions to the case studies and ideas on how to incorporate the use of case studies into the health information management curriculum.
Assessment: This is a very nice, easy to use, case studies book to present ethical challenges facing today's health information managers. The case studies are practical and realistic situations that health information managers almost certainly could encounter on the job over the course of their career. The methodology the author uses encourages readers or students to think through the situation and consider the pros and cons of each possible solution. By including the American Health Information Management Association's Code of Ethics, the author demonstrates the importance of ethical practice as defined by the professional association. The book provides a solid resource for instructors to use in health information educational programs to promote ethical practice to their students and graduates from the very start of their careers.
