Ever Nearer, revised edition: Mysterious Odyssey of a Papyrus Fragment and Handmade Gospel Book

Ever Nearer turns on the themes of nearness and desire in a story about a unique book, and the human lives it touches. This good, fun yarn is written as a collection of revealing interwoven fragments, under the theme of nearness.

Josep Isaacson encounters three vital moments of nearness. He stumbles into an encounter with an ancient papyrus fragment in Jerusalem. Then in a visit to Ireland he finds himself lost in the wonder of drawing near to the Book of Kells' calligraphy. And with perseverance that amazes himself, Josep enters the world of the scribe and creates his own copying of the Gospel of John in calligraphy and illumination. And binds the book by hand. When word about the book seeps out. The gospel book becomes sought after by tangible characters who desire that original book of calligraphy.

A gallery of images from that [real] gospel book is included in Ever Nearer to complement the imagination of the reader.

The papyrus fragment Josep Isaacson had once glimpsed comes 'round again in his life and Josep becomes its custodian in order to save it. In crisis that includes decryption, desire, theft, hunt, love, mystery, and death, the papyrus fragment and gospel book collide, and characters intersect in their rush to obtain, rescue, and own both the gospel book and the papyrus.

Story fragments range across Wisconsin, Nebraska, Israel, the John Rylands Library in England, and a museum-to-be in Tennessee, bringing disparate lives into conflict, intrigue, love and loss until resolution and catharsis emerge for the gospel book, papyrus, and characters. Readers are left to ponder desire, holy writing, passion, and forgiveness, as they encounter a clutch of authentic and engaging characters.

Ever Nearer is a poetic novel, including allusions [from scripture to Elvis], layers of meaning and reflection, the music of words, humor, and quiet invitation to interpret and discover revelation. And all with an undercurrent of divine desire for nearness to the creation.
