About the Author

Anthony R. Kovner, PhD, is professor at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University (NYU), and was director of the health policy and management program for 16 years. He was the fourth recipient of the Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. At NYU, he developed the health program capstone course and the executive master of public administration program for nurse leaders. He has written or edited 11 books and more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, many of them case studies. Kovner has been a senior manager of two hospitals, a nursing home, a group practice, and a neighborhood health center, as well as a senior healthcare consultant for a large industrial union. He has been a leader in the evidence-based management movement and served as a founding member of the Academic Council of the Center for Evidence-Based Management.

Description: This second edition of a book that takes an evidence-based approach to leadership and management in healthcare includes updated case studies and examples of high performing hospitals. The first edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide managers and administrators with a comprehensive method to understand the concept of evidence-based practice as it relates to leadership. The author asks: "Are leaders asking appropriate questions?"
Audience: The book is written for current and future healthcare managers and leaders.
Features: The book covers the concept of evidence-based management and specifically teaches managers how to reflect on their organization and help them be confident in what they are doing to provide the best services. The current examples and case studies are best features of the book. The case studies are pertinent and well developed. An instructor manual is also available, as well as a very well done appendix on additional readings on stakeholder concerns.
Assessment: This is a wonderful, well-written, and thorough addition to the field of management. I have not seen any other book on the incorporation of evidence-based management. This book is fascinating and informative. I particularly liked the stakeholder concerns and the case studies, especially what was learned from hurricane Katrina. This would be a wonderful book for any manager and would make a great addition to any hospital group!
