Overview

Rosenfeld argues that farm women have rarely been identified as productive farm workers and that they continue to be seen only as mothers and homemakers. She shows that in addition to performing a wide range of farm work, these women in fact help ensure the farm's economic survival by contributing wages from outside employment. She raises questions about government policy and stresses the need for study in both industrialized and development societies.

In the declining farm population, the proportion of farm owners and managers who are female has increased. This study examines women's share in farm tasks and decisions, in the community, in earning off-farm income, and in dealing with government agencies. It will encourage future research among scholars of rural life, working women, and family life. Large parts of the study will also interest less specialized readers. Rosenfeld's reviews of the sociological literature on family decision making, community and political participation, or the recent history of the agricultural sector make interesting reading as an introduction to these important subjects.
