Description: This book details evidence-based intravenous therapy guidelines in a bulleted format for home care nurses. It covers infusion access, delivery methods, and safe and effective infusion therapy in special populations and includes extensive descriptions, discussions, and rationales to achieve positive patient outcomes. There are also case studies with questions and answers.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a complete, evidence-based guide for home infusion therapy. Infusion therapy is being administered in increasing numbers, and this is a complete guide for nurses to accommodate the infusion required for patients in the home. The book goes beyond the author's objectives, by providing reinforcement of the principles discussed in the book with case studies.
Audience: The intended audience is practicing home care nurses, as well as discharge planners, case managers, and educators. I would add nurses who are in the transition of care process as well as nursing students designing a discharge plan for their "paper" patients. I can see where other healthcare professionals could benefit, such as providers and therapy professionals. The author is experienced in this area with appropriate credentials.
Features: The book begins with a foundation of safe home infusion therapy, then discusses the four aspects of home infusion therapy nursing care. It covers access devices and delivery methods of infusion, as well as the concept of infection prevention in home infusion therapy. Issues with vulnerable populations, such as oncology infusion and pain, are discussed for specific specialties. Sandwiched in the middle is the very important concept of patient and family education, a highlight of this book along with the Fast Facts in a Nutshell boxes. The bullet format, enhanced by appropriate discussions, is a great way to deliver the important concepts of home infusion. It would have been helpful to have illustrations.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for nurses to master peripheral and central intravenous therapy, infusion pumps and controllers, chemotherapeutic infusions, parenteral nutrition, and more. For each therapy, readers find indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages, patient selection criteria, equipment, implementation, complications, and proper documentation.
