About the Author

Kathy J. Morrison, MSN, RN, SCRN, FAHA is a certified stroke nurse, a Fellow of the American Heart Association, and a recipient of the prestigious Pennsylvania State Nightingale Award for Clinical Nursing Excellence. As the stroke program manager for the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, she oversaw all aspects of stroke care, from prehospital through stroke clinic follow-up until her retirement in 2021. She played a pivotal role in Penn State Hershey Medical Center's attainment of The Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center certification and has mentored many stroke program coordinators through the process of attaining Primary and Comprehensive Stroke Center certification. Ms. Morrison also served on The Joint Commission Expert Panel for Stroke Center certification standards.

Ms. Morrison's published works have appeared in nursing journals and neuroscience course curricula. Her books Fast Facts for Stroke Care Nursing 1st & 2nd editions, Stroke Certification Study Guide for Nurses and Stroke Nursing Certification Review have been well received in the nursing community, both as handy guides for stroke care nurses and as preparation tools for the SCRN® certification exam. Even in retirement, she remains active in leading SCRN® review courses, participating in community stroke awareness campaigns and facilitating a regional stroke survivor support group. She established the Stroke Coordinators of Pennsylvania (SCoPA) in 2010—a group of stroke coordinators whose collaborative work has resulted in significant improvements in stroke care and outcomes in community hospitals across central Pennsylvania. She is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, a member of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, a board member of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and a board member of the Stroke Survivors Foundation.

Description: This book succinctly presents a comprehensive account of stroke care. It starts with an overview of anatomy and physiology and connects that to the way strokes are identified. It then discusses diagnostic tools, leading to the prevention of secondary injuries and then the rehabilitation process. It presents stroke measures from expert organizations. Finally, it discusses patient and family education. The first edition was published in 2014, and with the development of stroke care emerging so quickly, this update is necessary.
Purpose: This is designed to be a practical guide for registered nurses caring for stroke patients. This would be a great resource not only on stroke units, but for other medical surgical units and emergency units. It could also be used in prehospital settings that transport stroke patients. The book is based on guidelines for the care of patients experiencing a stroke. Units specifically designed for the care of stroke patients are not available in all areas, and this book would be a great resource for nurses caring for stroke patients until they are transferred to a specialty unit.
Audience: The intended audience is neuroscience nurses, according to the author. However, the book could be useful for all nurses, student nurses, and other healthcare personnel caring for stroke patients, such as prehospital transport personnel or radiology personnel performing diagnostic studies on these patients. The author is certified in neuroscience, has received certification for stroke care, and has published in neuroscience curricular and in peer-reviewed nursing journals.
Features: The book starts with a historical perspective of stroke care and the development of care. After discussing the anatomy and physiology underlying what happens during the various types of strokes, the book presents assessment and diagnostic tools. A chapter discusses preventing secondary complications and then the book covers prehospital care through rehabilitation and beyond. Also covered is education of patients and families, as is prevention. The care is evidence based. Information is presented succinctly in a bulleted outline format using complete sentences. Fast facts in colored boxes are scattered throughout to highlight significant information. Guidelines are discussed, as is certification for all personnel and centers. In future editions, I would like to see more information on the interdisciplinary care of stroke patients in the acute care and rehabilitation phases.
Assessment: This book is very useful and the information based on the evidence is invaluable. It makes a great resource for all personnel involved in the care of stroke patients. Units should have this accessible. This updated edition is necessary, due to the explosion in guidelines for stroke care.
