Description: This concise book provides the most current clinical recommendations and nursing interventions for the antepartum and postpartum nurse. The Fast Facts in Nutshell in each chapter present valuable, high-level clinical information in a sentence or two. The small size makes it easy to tuck the book in a pocket for easy access during the day.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a basic reference for nurses caring for women and their families during the antepartum and postpartum periods. The book is worthy of the objectives and provides a needed concise methodology.
Audience: The book was written for the "clinician," which includes the entire healthcare team caring for antepartum and postpartum patients. The author does an excellent job of targeting the entire team as she notes clinical practice guidelines, nursing care, and overall care of the patient. The author is a seasoned women's health nurse and exhibits a thorough knowledge of the subject.
Features: The book is straightforward, describing the physiology, the pathophysiology, the equipment needed for assessment, the assessment technique, the treatment which is indicated, and follow-up considerations. This direct approach is appealing to readers. The book could have used a few more illustrations — Leopold's maneuvers and fetal heart tracings would have benefited from some illustration.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for antepartum and postpartum clinician that provides a quick and easy reference for clinical decision making.
