Description: This overview of the surgical treatment of cardiac disease describes the care of patients preoperatively, intraoperatively, postoperatively (both immediate and extended), and discharge.
Purpose: It provides a good introduction to the care of cardiac surgery patients and management of commonly seen postoperative complications.
Audience: It is intended to be used by nurses working in progressive care or interventional units to help them understand the experience of patients undergoing cardiac surgical procedures. This book would be a helpful for novice nurses or practitioners unfamiliar with this area. More experienced nurses would most likely find this book too basic to be useful for more than a quick review.
Features: The book's five parts address the preoperative, intraoperative, initial postoperative, extended postoperative care of patients undergoing cardiac surgical procedures and their long-term recovery. Each section presents helpful "Fast Facts in Nutshell." Illustrations, unfortunately, are in black and white and lack detail, but tables listing important information are well done.
Assessment: The title led me to expect that this book would be a reference for nurses working in the operating room or in an intensive care unit caring for cardiac surgery patients. It is much too basic to be useful for these nurses. Experienced cardiac surgery nurses would want much more detail on medication therapy and early diagnosis of potential postoperative complications such as cardiac tamponade through rhythm strip analysis. Information in this book is not unlike that found in a typical medical-surgical nursing textbook, but the pocket size presents the material in a concise and easily readable format.
