Description: Part of the Fast Facts series, this is an update of a handbook on depression that was last published in 2005.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide health professionals a quick reference with the latest information on depression.
Audience: The book is intended to help healthcare professionals who encounter patients with depression to understand, diagnose, and treat this illness appropriately.
Features: The books in this series are organized in a fairly routine fashion — overview, definitions and diagnosis, prevention and management, etc. The chapter, "Combined with Physical Health Problems," is well done and useful for health professionals. Chapters and pages are color coded for easy access. There are nicely done boxed summaries at the end of each chapter and handy references for further reading. The sections on prevention and management and suicide and self harm are particularly good.
Assessment: This is an excellent review and update on depressive illness. The authors pay special attention to subclinical depression and its inherent problems, as well as the myriad forms in which a mood disorder can present. They also address insomnia and the importance of sleep regulation in the treatment of mood disorders, a subject that is often overlooked. A new edition is justified as more research has been published about the optimal treatment for depression. I would highly recommend this book to any clinician who needs a fast, straightforward review of the identification, treatment, and management of patients with depression.
