Overview

This hard-to-find Lp is not really worth the search. The Chick Webb Orchestra is heard in broadcasts from 1937 and 1939 (the dates and personnel listing are inexcusably not given) and there is less than 27 minutes of music; little all that significant occurs. Ella Fitzgerald takes four vocals and the versions of "That's A Plenty" and "One O'Clock Jump" have their exciting moments but overall this is just a routine (and poorly annotated) set. The Mills Brothers (who are not billed at all) are featured on "Swing Mr. Charlie." The music deserves to be reissued (along with some other sessions) in a more coherent fashion. ~ Scott Yanow
