Description: This book presents feline medicine topics in a case-based self-assessment format, using largely a question-answer format.
Purpose: The editors' principle aspiration of providing a tool readers can use to test their knowledge of feline medicine and clinical reasoning skills has been realized. The goal of providing readily-accessible information in a clinical reference is less reliably met.
Audience: The book is designed for both veterinary students and practitioners, and is an excellent review for small animal interns and medicine residents as well. In addition to their own expertise, the editors have drawn upon the experience of many other specialists who manage feline patients to assemble the varied cases in the book.
Features: The nine chapters are organized based on affected body system (dermatological disorders, gastrointestinal & hepatic disorders), with each chapter presenting multiple cases. Color tabs on the edge of the pages demarcate chapter locations but are not very useful in the absence of a table of contents. Generally, each case is addressed with signalment and clinical history, clinical examination, diagnostics, results, treatment, outcome, and discussion and concludes with a list of recommendations for further reading. Pertinent tips for clinical management are highlighted in a separate box. Some cases also feature practical sections on what to do while awaiting test results or if finances are limited. The text is well supported by pertinent images related to the cases. The utility of the index is hindered by the inconsistent and not necessarily alphabetical listing (e.g., "Feline liver disease, FLUTD, Feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORLs)" or "Feline uroliths, Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) infection, Fentanyl)".
Assessment: This book is an excellent self-assessment tool and is quite instructive when read in its entirety from cover to cover. It is less suitable as a reference based on its design and indexing.
