About the Author

Peter C. Bjarkman (1941-2018) is widely acknowledged as the leading authority on post-revolution Cuban baseball and a prolific writer and commentator on the sport. He was interviewed on the subject on national and international radio and television networks, including NPR, PBS, BBC, and MSNBC. Bjarkman appeared as a Cuba baseball expert on the Travel Channel’s “No Reservations Cuba,” ESPN’s “30 for 30” documentary, Brothers in Exile, and the MLB Productions documentary film Cuba: Island of Baseball. Bjarkman was a contributing writer for the Hall of Fame-sponsored website www.LaVidaBaseball.com. He is the author of A History of Cuban Baseball, 1864–2006 (2014) and Cuba’s Baseball Defectors: The Inside Story (2016) which won the SABR Baseball Research Award. He was also awarded the SABR Henry Chadwick Award in 2016, which honors baseball’s great researchers.

Even in death, Fidel Castro remains central to the Cuban mind-set, and nowhere is that more evident than in this new book on Castro's central role in Cuban baseball, past and present. Bjarkman's (Cuba's Baseball Defectors) exhaustive research paints a detailed history of baseball on the island after the revolution in 1959 and delves into the politicization of the wildly popular game and diplomatic relations with baseball and government in America. Calling on comprehensive research, the author's chapter on Castro and his baseball prowess dispels long-held beliefs of the leader as a major league prospect. He also puts to rest theories of the premature end of baseball in Cuba after the revolution. The author tracks the celebratory game of July 24, 1959, in which Castro participated in an exhibition game (celebrating the 26th of July Movement). Two nights later, in an International League game between the Havana Sugar Kings and Rochester Red Wings, shots marred a tight game and a player and coach were hit by stray gunfire. Amid concerns for security and fair play, the 1962 league playoffs in Havana ended American professional baseball in Cuba. In this thorough history, Bjarkman (Cuba’s Baseball Defectors), examines Cuba’s baseball leagues after Fidel Castro’s rise to power in 1959, as well as several myths about Castro’s own baseball prowess and his impact on the country’s favorite sport. The future rebel leader, supposedly a pitcher gifted with a “wicked bleeping curveball,” was allegedly pursued by American big league scouts as a teen, but Bjarkman debunks that claim as merely hype created during photo ops. As for Castro’s actual involvement in the sport, Bjarkman notes Castro’s strong influence in creating a showcase of the minor league Havana Sugar Kings team and his expansion of the Cuban professional league from the original four clubs to a dozen by the first decade after the revolution. And though American sport pundits complained that Cuban teams used pros, not amateurs, to dominate in various international competitions, Bjarkman points out that American teams have long benefited from such Cuban-trained stars as Yoenis Cespedes (1980s New York Mets), Aroldis Chapman (1980s Yankees), and Yasiel Puig (2010s L.A. Dodgers). Bjartman’s insightful survey of Castro-era baseball deserves a broad audience. (Dec.)
