Overview

A comprehensive survey on the use of bedside skills and perimetric devices to the test visual fields, and how to interpret the results. To develop the clinician's interpretative skills, the authors include a chapter on visual anatomy and an atlas of 100 real-life cases arranged in anatomic order from retina to striate cortex. By placing a brief clinical vignette with a visual field on one side of the page and a description of the field and its causal lesion on the opposite side, the reader will be able to learn interpretation in a simulated clinical setting. An additional quiz section of twenty randomly arranged visual fields provides readers with an opportunity to test their newly acquired skills.

Barton, a neurologist/neuro-ophthalmologist and Michael Benatar, a clinical neurologist, in response to a correctly perceived need. The book begins with a chapter on the importance and principles of perimetry and the normal visual field. This is followed by chapters on the functional anatomy of the visual system and the techniques for performing perimetry in the office and at the bedside. The final two didactic chapters detail the use of the two most important instruments: the Goldmann perimeter and the Humphrey automated field analyzer. After the five didactic chapters, there is an impressive 120 case atlas complete with relevant histories, neuroimaging, and detailed explanations of the pathophysiology of the visual field disturbances. Description: The authors have created a handsome and instructive textbook on the performance and interpretation of visual fields in clinical practice.
Purpose: The authors have used the case history method effectively to convey both the complexity and the power of visual field testing as performed with real patients in clinical practice.
Audience: This book will appeal to both neurologists and ophthalmologists who do visual field testing on patients with neurological illnesses. The emphasis is more neurological than ophthalmological.
Features: This is a beautifully illustrated book with many visuals fields and corresponding neuroradiological images. The first five chapters of the book cover the normal visual field, perimetry at the bedside, functional neuroanatomy of the visual system, and the use of Goldman and Humphrey perimetry. The second half of the book consists of more than 100 cases histories, with visual fields, interpretive comments, and corresponding neuroradiological images. The cases begin with lesions of the retina and work backward through the visual system to the striate cortex.
Assessment: This book is concise, well-written, and well-illustrated. It covers a difficult topic deftly and guides the reader through both the complexities of perimetry and the interpretation of visual field testing. The cases are instructive and lead the reader smoothly along the visual pathways from retina to visual cortex. This book is highly recommended to clinical neurologists and clinical ophthalmologists alike.
