This two-volume set contains comprehensive chapters dealing with general virology, including replication, genetics, immune response, diagnosis, evolution, epidemiology, antiviral agents, and more. Additional chapters deal with individual viruses, organized by virus family. The book is designed to provide general concepts in basic and medical virology, with emphasis on medically important viruses. For many of the individual viruses there are two chapters, one dealing with the molecular biology and replication of the virus, and a second describing the biology and pathogenesis of the virus. The book is designed as a comprehensive reference work for anyone working with viruses. Chapters are written by recognized authorities on each of the topics. The detail presented is at a level that provides useful information for basic science researchers and graduates students in virology. In addition the chapters on biology and pathogenesis should make it a very useful reference for clinicians. The illustrations are informative, generally clear, and complete. Detailed information is often provided in tabular form. The text is extensively referenced, identifying both historically important studies as well as recent work. The index is thorough, increasing the book's value as a reference work. The information within chapters on individual viruses is organized in uniform topics identified by subheadings so that specific information is easy to find. This book is the most comprehensive work available in general virology, especially on viruses of medical and veterinary importance. Previous editions have served as the reference work in this field and the new edition should continue to serve that role. Thisedition contains updated material in all chapters and new chapters on viruses infecting bacteria, fungi, insects, and plants. This thorough, well-written reference is a necessity for medical or veterinary libraries or for individuals working in, or teaching, virology.

The original work was published in 1985 as ; the name was expanded with the third edition to acknowledge the original editor, Bernie Fields, now deceased. This reference comprises two hefty volumes<-->90 contributions<-->addressing both the molecular aspects of viral replication and the medical features of viral infections. Coverage of the general aspects of virology has been enhanced in this edition with new chapters on principles of virology, virus entry and uncoating, replication strategies of RNA viruses and DNA viruses, virus assembly, and virus vectors. The second part, which covers specific virus families and specific viruses of medical importance has new chapters on the arteriviruses, the and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus, as well as expansion of the retrovirus section. Description: This updated edition of Fields Virology comprises two parts. The first deals with general aspects of virology and includes an overview of viruses of plants, insects, and microorganisms.The second part covers viral replication and provides information on viruses of medical significance. The third edition was published in 1996.
Purpose: The main focus is to address molecular aspects of replication and pathogenesis of viruses of medical importance. These are worthy objectives as an understanding of such mechanisms aids in designing strategies to control and prevent viral infections. Previous editions have been widely used as virology references and this edition addressing aspects of newly emerging viral infections and advances in virology was needed. The book meets the objectives adequately.
Audience: This book targets a wide audience, including students, researchers, and medical practitioners of virology. The authors are authorities in their respective areas of virus research and the editors are key opinion leaders in the fields of virology and infectious diseases.
Features: The 22 chapters in the first part overviews basic aspects of virology such as virus structure, evolution, life cycle, pathogenesis, and antiviral immune responses. In the second part, 23 families of viruses containing viruses of medical significance are discussed in some detail. There is more specific information on some viruses than others, but this is not a shortcoming. The authors have made every effort to include as much current information as possible. The second part also includes a section that addresses nonclassified infectious agents.
Assessment: As with previous editions, this edition is well written and comprehensive. The authors have incorporated current thinking and advances in virology and the book is a good reference source for all virologists.
