Preface

Introduction to FIGHT BACK: How to Beat the Coronavirus by Chauncey W. Crandall MD with Charlotte Libov

The first cluster of cases caused by coronavirus-19 was announced by China on Dec. 31, and, less than a month later, the first known case of it in the U.S. was confirmed.

At the same time, this coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19, was spreading rapidly through Asia, and then Europe, and eventually to all corners of the globe. The outbreak was so massive that, on March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed it to be a pandemic, one of those rare diseases whose scale is so massive that it sweeps across all international borders, affecting the total world.

By the time we awakened on April 12, Easter Sunday, most of our country was a world that had been self-isolated to try and halt the spread of COVID-19; most all of our churches and synagogues were closed; our hotels empty, our cafes and restaurants shuttered. Nursing homes were barred to visitors to attempt to stem the tragic outbreaks there; most of our parks, beaches and playgrounds were barricaded, and, where massive outbreaks had occurred, convention centers and stadiums had been transformed into field hospitals.

The streets of both small towns and major cities were mostly empty; even bustling thoroughfares like New York’s Fifth Avenue. Las Vegas was a ghost town, it’s casinos closed, shows cancelled, and its famous strip deserted.

What happened was something that almost none of us had ever seen in our lifetimes or could have ever imagined; the United States of America had been shut down, closed to business because of a microscopic, invisible, viral pathogen

As this book goes to press, and many of our cities are emerging from lockdown, it remains obvious that this disease is still spreading, amidst fears of a resurgence, along with fears of a second wave to come in the fall.

The information in this book is as up-to-date as possible, but, with scientists here and around the world, working at breakneck speed, new information is constantly emerging.

Until the time that we have a vaccine, your job will be to stay informed, take steps to make yourself as healthy as you can be, and always protect yourself against infection – these are the three steps you can take now to fight back against COVID-19.
