About the Author

Butch Krieger has worked as a professional artist for 42 years, including several years as a courtroom illustrator, with credits that include CBS, CNN, the AP, and USA Today. Mr. Krieger specializes in portrait and figure art, as well as trompe loeil still lifes. In addition to his first book, Watercolor Basics: People (North Light Books) he has written over 100 articles for various art magazines. Mr. Krieger resides in Washington State.
 
Since 2005, Live Model Books has been photographing the human form for study by artists, illustrators, or anyone who needs high-quality figure reference photos. This guide by artist Krieger (Watercolor Basics: People) and Live Model Books, a publisher of figure reference photos, offers a method of life drawing that readers can try virtually anywhere—without a live model. Many step-by-step exercises illustrated with photographs of professional models demonstrate the basics of drawing the human nude figure; portraying an active figure; composition; and transitioning sketches to paintings. Crucially, the book comes with a companion disc loaded with thousands of "pose photographs," similar to those found in the text, of female and male professional models of varying ages, ethnicities, sizes, and shapes. Poses on the disc include many different angles and rotations. There is greater variety and control available to the artist here than in some of the best art schools, and the volume of pose photos offers lots of opportunity to practice figure drawing. VERDICT Great for anyone who wishes to draw nude human bodies but lacks access to professional models or studio facilities.
