Description: This book covers many of the basic science concepts medical students will see on the USMLE Step 1 exam. It begins with a brief overview of relevant anatomy and histology and contains chapters on biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and public health.
Purpose: The intent is to provide medical students with an up-to-date book to prepare for the USMLE Step 1. This is a worthy objective that the authors meet.
Audience: The audience is medical students preparing for the exam. The authors recommend using this book throughout the preclinical medical school curriculum as a means to incorporate USMLE Step 1 key concepts into preclinical learning. It can be used independently or in conjunction with First Aid for the Basic Sciences: Organ Systems, 3rd edition, Le et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2017), and First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 2018, 28th edition, Le et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2018).
Features: The book covers basic science concepts for the USMLE Step 1 exam including anatomy, histology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, immunology, pathology, and public health. It is presented predominantly in paragraph format, with bulleted lists for high-yield concepts, while "Key Facts" and "Clinical Correlations" in the margins reinforce key concepts and provide examples of how the basic science material might be tested on the exam. The in-depth microbiology chapter covers the topic well, including characteristics, clinical symptoms, and treatment for each organism. The biochemistry chapter, while it sufficiently covers cell biology and biochemical pathways, could be improved by better organization of the figures and tables. One of the greatest strengths of this book is its use of images and tables. Many of these images are also used in First Aid for the USMLE Step 1, providing continuity between the two.
Assessment: This is a high quality book that will be useful to medical students preparing for the USMLE Step 1 exam. The third edition is a necessary update as it includes a new chapter, "Public Health Sciences," that touches on epidemiology, biostatistics, and ethics to reflect the changing nature of the exam. This book covers similar content to what First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 does, but in greater detail that provides clarification of high-yield topics.
