Description: This book in the First Aid series is a comprehensive review of emergency medicine for recent residency graduates that are intending to take the emergency medicine written board exam. The previous edition was published in 2012 and with the rapid evolution of the field, this is a needed update.
Purpose: The authors describe this as a focused, easy-to-use review book for preparing for the American Board of Emergency Medicine Qualifying Examination. Passing this written exam is a critical step in obtaining board certification and many physicians are in need of a good study tool to help prepare for this exam. This book fulfills that need.
Audience: The audience is physicians, both residents and recent residency graduates who are planning to take the written board exam. As with any large reference, this one is written by an array of authors. The book makes a point of describing these authors as "practicing physicians" and it seems that this is a well-qualified group.
Features: The book includes over 1,000 pages and covers the breadth of emergency medicine. Like many references, it dedicates chapters to the more critical aspects of emergency medicine such as resuscitation, cardiovascular emergencies, and trauma as well as to various specialties contained within emergency medicine, such as infectious disease, obstetrics, neurology, and others. A nice blend of written text and bulleted highlights helps cover topics in a succinct but thorough manner. The book leaves large margins for notes. The margins also contain Key Facts that are high-yield points not to be missed. There are no glaring omissions in this substantial book.
Assessment: This is a book that can be read efficiently and provides high-yield material for board review. I will be taking a board recertification exam in several months and will likely use this book as an adjunct to prepare for that exam. I appreciate the succinct and readable text is as well as the nice accompanying images and tables.
