Description: This book is important for medical students preparing for the pediatrics rotation and subsequent exams. The chapters are organized by pediatric specialty. Case studies help to improve knowledge transfer and retention. The illustrations and photographs are high quality and reinforce the explanations in the text. The book highlights major teaching points for learners.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide high-yield pediatrics facts in concise, easy-to-digest pearls of information. This book successfully meets its goal and is worth the investment for learners in pediatrics.
Audience: The book is written for third- and fourth-year medical students. It meets the needs of its intended audience. The listed authors are accomplished, but it would help to have more contributors writing specific chapters corresponding to their specialties or areas of expertise in subsequent editions.
Features: The book covers all the major topics in general pediatrics as well as the pediatric subspecialties. It is well organized with each chapter devoted to a particular field of pediatrics. The text is clearly written and easy to understand. "Exam Tips" in the sidebar will be helpful not only for the post-rotation exam, but also as teaching points on rounds. As an attending, I recognize that many of the "Ward Tips" in the sidebar are actual questions my colleagues and I ask; these tips are not only helpful in improving learners' performance on rounds, but also are practical pearls regardless of what path of medicine learners will eventually take. The illustrations and photos are impactful and pertinent to the text they reference. The layout of the book is well organized, and the index makes finding specific topics easy. The font size is small and may be difficult for those with visual impairments to read.
Assessment: This book is well written and contains high-yield facts that will help learners on their pediatrics rotation and post-rotation exams. The book is well organized and concise. This title would also do well as an ebook.
