Purpose: The book is part of the First Aid series designed to help medical students review important concepts in specific medical fields. According to the authors, the purpose is to provide a guide to help medical students prepare for clerkship exams as well as to help in clinical diagnosis and treatment of problems seen by psychiatrists. The book accomplishes this purpose by providing a concise reference for students who are rotating in psychiatry to understand the main points in an easily accessible format.
Audience: The intended audience is medical students who are in their psychiatry clinical rotation or are preparing for the clerkship exam. The authors also suggest that it can be a valuable resource to review relevant principles of psychiatry when preparing for USMLE Step 2 and 3 exams later on during training. This book meets these needs, as it is a brief overview that highlights important concepts and provides relevant and practical application.
Features: This book broadly covers general psychiatry, which is categorized in topics by disorders, similar to the DSM-5. There are also chapters with tips on succeeding on the psychiatric clerkship as well as tips for interviewing and diagnostic skills. Besides sections reviewing common psychiatric disorders, there are sections on psychotherapies as well as a review of psychopharmacology. The book is well organized and provides a brief overview of the important psychiatric conditions. Boxes in the margins highlight important and practical information and case examples highlight important principles. The bullet-point format makes the contents readily accessible. While this is a good overview, it should not be used for a thorough study of the field of psychiatry.
Assessment: This is a part of a well-known series of review books for medical students doing their clinical rotations. It provides a concise review of the main points in psychiatry and offers it in a practical way that is readily understandable and accessible. While it presents important highlights in psychiatry, the majority of the content seems very similar to the previous edition and I am not sure how much additional information appears in this updated edition. This book provides a quick review of the high-yield principles of psychiatry rather than an in-depth look at topics in psychiatry.
