Description: This book offers a comprehensive overview of focal therapy for prostate cancer by experts in urology, radiation oncology, radiology, medical oncology, and pathology from North America and Western Europe.
Purpose: The goal is to provide information about the rationale behind the controversial idea of partial gland treatment of prostate cancer, commonly known as focal therapy. The editors attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and goals of focal treatment of prostate cancer. These include the accurate imaging and diagnosis of tumor lesions and effective modalities of tissue destruction, while avoiding the peril of untreated, potentially lethal disease.
Audience: As a book devoted to a rather narrow segment of prostate cancer treatment, it is most appropriate for clinicians who treat patients for prostate cancer and researchers.
Features: The book is divided into three sections that cover the question of the role of focal therapy of prostate cancer, the imaging modalities used to localize tumor foci, and the different tissue ablative modalities being explored for this treatment. It provides a broad descriptive overview of imaging and tissue ablative modalities in clinical practice as well as some information about innovative imaging and treatment modalities on the horizon. The references are somewhat sparse, but that is not surprising given the lack of randomized clinical trial data and level one evidence for this controversial treatment approach. The illustrations are high quality and are presented in color in several chapters.
Assessment: This is a well-written, descriptive overview of the issues and technologies applicable to focal therapy for prostate cancer. Given the relative lack of rigorous research in this area, the authors do a good job of outlining the technical issues involved with accurate targeting and destruction of focal prostate cancer lesions. The editors and authors are all proponents of focal therapy for prostate cancer, but a better description of the controversies involved in this approach would strengthen the book and provide a more balanced review.
