Narrator Adenrele Ojo brings listeners to North Carolina and the complicated relationship between Ashiya Waters and Russell Gilchrist. Ashiya and Russell’s past relationship ended badly, but she now needs his help, having inherited her grandmother’s company. Ojo infuses the narration with Southern charm. She gives each of Ashiya’s elderly aunts a unique voice; one has a cigarette-roughen timbre, the other the sound of constantly sucking on hard candy. Russell’s brother went missing 10 years ago, and Ojo perfectly captures Russell’s frustration and anguish at the situation. Listeners will enjoy Ojo’s performance as Ashiya and Russell overcome their past and build a future together. S.B. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine

Forbidden Promises is a deeply felt, engrossing, soapy romance that manages to both luxuriate in its angst, while also interrogating something far more wide-reaching and universal than the admittedly sexy taboo appeal of its central conceit.”—Entertainment Weekly on Forbidden Promises
“Politics, passion, and family drama combine to make a deliciously soapy second-chance, brother’s-best-friend romance. Readers of Alisha Rai’s Forbidden Hearts series or Reese Ryan’s Engaging the Enemy will be tantalized and surprised by the many twists and turns.”—Library Journal on Forbidden Promises
“A romance for readers looking for equal parts passion and family drama.”—Kirkus Reviews on Forbidden Promises

In Williams's fourth "Jackson Falls" romance (following Careless Whispers), Ashiya Waters is taking over leadership of her late grandmother's multimillion-dollar conglomerate in North Carolina. Ashiya's ex-boyfriend, Russell Gilchrist, is assigned to help her, and he can't turn it down if he wants a shot at being the new chief operating officer of Robidoux Holdings. When Russell discovers that Ashiya's new business is located in the same town where his brother disappeared a decade earlier, he jumps at the chance to do some investigating on his own. He can't forgive Ashiya for using him in the past; now he intends to use her to get closure. When Ashiya's business and Russell's investigation cross paths, they'll have to work together to find answers to the past, the present, and hopefully, the future. VERDICT Williams's novel doesn't shy away from family dysfunction, and sometimes there are no easy answers, keeping readers guessing until the end. Recommended for all public libraries.
