Description: This book offers a comprehensive review of the concepts of interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP). The book is based on the Core Competencies of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (CCICP), developed by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative. It begins with the history of IPE and describes the core competencies and subcompetencies that comprise the CCICP. The book concludes with various case studies to illustrate the professional behaviors referred to in the competencies.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a guide to understanding and applying the CCICP. This objective is clearly met. Readers will benefit from the clear and thorough descriptions of the competencies. Case studies expound on the competencies, and examples of how to implement the desired professional behaviors are highlighted in each competency. As most health professions begin to incorporate IPE into their educational requirements, this book fills a gap by offering practical examples that can be used for instruction.
Audience: It is intended for educators and students in health disciplines. It also could be used by practicing clinicians with an interest in ICP. The authors, along with the professional consultant panel are from a variety of health professions, add to the richness of the interprofessional content in this book. All of the authors have extensive experience in IPE.
Features: The book begins with the history of IPE and the development of the CCICP. The next few chapters describe ICP using systems theory as a guide, and the illness-wellness continuum and patient-centered care as the framework. The chapters devoted to the four core competencies are grouped together. The first chapter in this section provides background knowledge and the key concepts necessary to understand the featured core competency. The second chapter describes the core and subcompetencies using case studies as examples. The third chapter in the section contains several case studies related to the core competency. The last chapter in the book includes a variety of case studies that necessitate application of all four core competencies.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for students and educators alike. It provides the necessary background to understand and apply the CCICP. It would be a great addition to any health sciences curriculum interested in providing IPE experiences for students.
