This historical novel was first published in 1944, when Reconstruction was popularly viewed as a time of unrelieved political and social sordidness, a time when childlike former slaves fumbled the rights and responsibilities Northerners had thrust upon them. Fast, a white leftist profoundly affected by very different portrait of Reconstruction by the black activist and scholar W.E.B. Du Bois, wrote a novel that captured the accomplishments of Reconstruction governments. It also showed the Klan as the violent terrorist group it was--not the patriotic organization that history books of the 1940s would have had it.
