Description: This is the 16th edition of a U.K. book on differential diagnosis first published in 1912. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: Henry French explained in the first edition that "it is an alphabetic index to help in the differential diagnosis of any condition which may be seen in hospital or general practice." The editors of this edition make the point that patients travel the world and the incubation periods of some infectious diseases make the differential diagnosis all the more challenging. In actuality, the editors have remained true to the original intent of Henry French and have produced an excellent reference.
Audience: Although the audience is general practitioners in the U.K., the book can serve as an immediate reference for all, including medical personnel and laypersons. The editors and authors are highly experienced clinicians.
Features: The book is organized alphabetically, which allows laypersons an easier way to access the information. Each diagnosis is presented with an explanation of the condition, well-produced relevant color pictures and radiographs, and summary figures. The photographs and the radiographs are extraordinarily well done. There are no references, but that is not the purpose of this book.
Assessment: This is an extremely useful reference for every clinician's library. It is complete and easy to use. I would highly recommend it to all.
