About the Author

Dennis Poncher was born in Chicago, Illinois in June of 1938. At the age of four his family moved to Southern California where he began his education including two years of college before entering the US Army. After his completion in the military, Dennis married his childhood sweetheart Joyce Goldstein and within two years, moved to their dream home in the San Fernando Valley where they began raising a family, daughter Lesli Renee, and son Ian David.

It was during the seven years of owning his own dress shops that his wife Joyce lost her battle with Diabetes and passed away two days after her 41st birthday. Dennis was left with two out of control teens. Thirteen-year-old Ian was expelled from school for using and selling drugs while his almost sixteen-year-old sister announced at her mother’s funeral that she was 2 months pregnant.

After exhausting all resources including therapy and a local parenting group, Dennis opened ”Because I Love You” (BILY) in March of 1982 with just 8 parents. Since that time, BILY has blossomed to 14 states and Canada with over 700, 000 parents and youth who have gone through his programs. He also authored a book that parents obtain in the meetings as well as creating a weekend family encounter that he runs yearly, called Open Your Heart-Communication Camp. He has currently completed his autobiography titled “Daddy, I’m Pregnant” which is in the hands of a publishing agent.

In addition to running meetings, he also answers hot line calls daily along with numerous e- mails on BILY’s web site at www.bily.org., partially due to the repeated media referrals from national columnists such as Dear Annie and Dear Abby. He has been a guest on Oprah, Geraldo, Good Morning America and many more local and national media exposures as well as a key note speaker at numerous schools, hospitals and mental health conventions. It is his long-term goal to see BILY groups in every community across our nation…..
