Overview

Drummer Peter Erskine mostly plays in support during this high-quality bop-oriented quartet date. The lead voice, tenor saxophonist Richard Torres (who had been with Stan Kenton during the period Erskine was there), displays an original tone sometimes slightly reminiscent of Ernie Watts, a swinging style, and the ability to improvise logical yet unpredictable solos. With strong assistance provided by pianist Alan Pasqua and bassist Dave Carpenter (both of whom make excellent use of their solo space), along with the drummer, Torres explores six of his basic originals, plus the ancient standard "Sweetheart of All My Dreams," Erskine's "Modern Drummer Blues" and (from the Kenton book) a wistful version of "Artistry In Rhythm" and a straight-ahead "Intermission Riff." Easy music to enjoy, this CD will make one want to see the underrated Richard Torres play in person. ~ Scott Yanow
