Other fine, recent accounts of the subject matter of the present monograph exist. But Soviet authors have traditionally enjoyed a special gift for the clear exposition of mathematical material, and it is that circumstance which lends this new title its special value. The authors enjoyed a close working relationship with, and acknowledge a profound indebtedness to, N.V. Timofeeff-Ressovsky (recently deceased), who was a pioneer in the field. All standard topics are treated with outstanding clarity, in historical perspective, in good detail but with a minimum of mathematical fuss. Nine chapters (Part I) are given to deterministic models, and four (Part II) to stochastic models. Useful notes appear at the end of each of the chapters.
