Description: This book draws together, within a reasonably sized text, a brief overview of fungal biology and basic genetics together with more detailed discussions of the special features of various specific species and of techniques for exploiting fungal genetics.
Purpose: The increasing utility of fungi for various aspects of molecular biology and molecular genetics makes the appearance of such a volume useful, particularly for those investigators who have no previous experience in fungal systems.
Audience: Although aimed primarily at research investigators and libraries that serve them, the book may also have some utility for appropriate advanced courses.
Features: The book is multiauthored, with 30 contributors to the 21 chapters. In addition to basic fungal biology and genetics, there is more detailed coverage of topics such as mutagenesis, recombination, mapping, mitochondrial genes, and transposable elements. Approximately a dozen genera/species are discussed in some detail, including classical ones such as Saccharomyces, Candida, Neurospora and Aspergillus. Those chapters dealing with technical applications contain detailed protocols. Numerous black-and-white illustrations and photomicrographs are used with good effect. Each chapter carries its own reference section with references extending into 1995. The table of contents and index are well constructed, and a special index is included to guide the reader to places where particular fungal species are discussed. An additional author index is included for authors of reports cited in the reference sections.
Assessment: This is a useful book, especially for investigators who have no previous experience in fungal systems.
