Overview

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) has come a long way since early experiments in animals where it was found to induce a sleep-like state and from its use in general anaesthesia in human subjects. It has been found to be a naturally-occurring compound in the brain, a metabolite of GABA, the emerging ubiquitous inhibitory neurotransmitter. Purpose: The purpose is to address specific aspects of the pharmacology and physiology of gamma-hydroxybutyrate and its molecular, functional, and clinical aspects. These worthy and justified objectives are fully met by all authors.
Audience: This book is particularly targeted at neurologists and neuropharmacologists, an appropriate audience. The authors are credible experts in the field.
Features: The 14 chapters are written by 29 authors. The initial few chapters describe the molecular structure of gamma-hydroxybutyrate. In a progressive and organized manner, the book starts describing the different possible research applications of this component in current neurological practice. The pictures are self explanatory and the text well written.
Assessment: This is an important book for neuropharmacological libraries involved in research on gamma-hydroxybutyrate.
