Description: This is a companion review and study guide for Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology, 25th edition, Barrett et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2016)
Purpose: The purpose is to provide medical students with a more user-friendly means to review physiology in preparation for the USMLE STEP 1 exam as compared to using the comprehensive textbook for this purpose. The review's condensed, well-organized content helps in this regard, but it falls short on providing realistic USMLE clinically based, applied physiology questions.
Audience: The intended audience is first- and second-year medical students who need to test their understanding of medical physiology in preparation for the USMLE STEP 1 exam. It is written at this level and is not well suited for undergraduate students. The authors are all outstanding physiologists and authors of medical physiology textbooks.
Features: This book covers all the major subdisciplines of medical physiology condensed to essential concepts and processes. Its illustrations are excellent and its organization into well labeled, concise sections and subsections helps students retrieve specifics easily. It reflects the classic emphasis of the parent textbook on endocrinology, metabolism, and GI physiology, with lesser emphasis on the cardio-pulmonary-renal axis. Every chapter is enriched by review questions with explanations for right and wrong answers. Short essays on clinical diseases related to physiological concepts in a chapter as well as therapeutic highlights related to its content add clinical relevance. The review questions, however, fall short of true clinically based physiology applications.
Assessment: The authors' claim that the book contains USMLE clinically based application questions suitable for STEP 1 preparation is potentially misleading to medical students. The review questions are overwhelmingly of the pseudo clinical vignette type. Such vignettes have the appearance of being clinically based, applied physiology questions, but they are not because clinical information is simply appended in front of a question and the question can be answered directly without the need of the clinical information. Nevertheless, students may find this to be a useful tool for helping them understand the discipline of physiology. Extracting the more important physiology concepts from the main textbook and providing review questions that have explanations of both right and wrong answers make this book a good tool that students can use to understand physiology.
