Based on her ethnographic study of two groups of young working- class people from Barcelona, Pujolar proposes a new way to analyze the relation between language use and gender identity. She includes a large number of transcripts from conversations and interviews, changing the names to protect the privacy of subjects, but retaining characteristics of their original that indicate gender and whether their names took Catalan or Spanish forms; she has also changed some details about their lives as well, so their mothers would not find out what they were really doing downtown.
