About the Author

Dandridge, Jefferson County, TN., native, James Harvey Mathes was born June 29, 1841. He was the son of Rev. William Alfred and Margaret M. (Hart) Mathes. Educated at an academy at Westminster, TN, when the Civil War began, he was teaching and reading law in Atlanta. He served in the 37th TN. Regiment, C.S.A., and was often deployed for for special service and staff duty. He participated in many bloody engagements in the western theater of the war, losing a leg and having a horse shot from under him, July 22, 1864, in Atlanta, GA., After the war, he embarked upon a career in journalism in Memphis. In 1893, he began what would be two terms in the state legislature, attending various state and national Democratic conventions, and traveling abroad several times. He was appointed by Governor Marks of TN to the Paris exposition in 1878 as Commissioner. In 1884, he was an elector on the Cleveland - Hendricks Democratic Presidential ticket. Mathes served twelve years on the Board of the University of Tennessee, at Knoxville, and in other positions of honor and trust. James Harvey Mathes died of consumption on December 15, 1902, shortly after this book was published.
