The first three chapters discuss the problems associated with contaminated lands and address the nature of soil and the soil- water system. Interactions between the soil fractions and pollutants are next examined, followed by discussion of partitioning, fate, and persistence of pollutants. Inorganic contaminants, particularly heavy metals, and the processes that contribute to the transformation and degradation of organic chemical pollutants are also covered.
