Overview

A Middle East scholar writes in a clear straightforward manner, carefully explaining who the terrorists are, where they come from, how they justify killing civilians in the name of God, and why the United States has become the latest target. "Grover Gardner is flawless in some difficult pronunciations, measured in his speed as if listeners were taking notes, and clearly committed to explanations of complex issues."

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

9/11 Wiktorowicz makes a very wise move right at the beginning of this book and carries it through to its startling conclusion. Instead of focusing on the myriad persons allegedly connected with the events of September 11, 2001, many of them with similar sounding names that will leave the listener totally confused, he explains the precepts of the various sects of Islam that influenced these men to devise and carry out actions seemingly incomprehensible to Judeo-Christian followers. Most of us are woefully ignorant of Islam and its teachings, and if we take to heart the information presented here we might better understand why the United States is considered the "Great Satan" in the eyes of millions around the world. The author places blame on the Clinton and both Bush administrations for believing that kind acts and benevolent statements would be enough to erase the mistrust many Islamics have against us. But in a remarkable conclusion, Wiktorowicz presents the idea that the best way to end an endless wave of terrorism from the Middle East is to work with many of the groups we now consider to be our enemies. Read by Grover Gardner, this thought-provoking, challenging work will enlighten many and show that there is, indeed, a light at the end of the seemingly endless tunnel constructed of terrorism, hatred, and turmoil. Essential for all libraries that seek to provide their patrons with the means to understanding the horror of September 11.-Joseph L. FEB/MAR 03 - AudioFile

Professor Quintan Wiktorowicz attempts to explain the motivation for the terrorist attacks of September 11. Surprisingly, Wiktorowicz does not deliver his own lecture, but Grover Gardner’s reading of it sounds as if he is the teacher. In reality, however, most people find it difficult, if not impossible, to understand the events of September 11. Wiktorowicz’s analysis succeeds not by making the unfathomable rational, rather by explaining how these Islamic terrorists came to acquire their views and the ways in which they rationalized even the most heinous of actions under the guise of religion. Gardner presents Wiktorowicz’s essay with the authoritative voice that one expects from a professor or a trusted announcer. Gardner’s presentation, like the material itself, is straight-forward and without unnecessary dramatics. D.J.S. © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine
